The first one looks like it would fit better than the second one.

Well sort of for adverting, we are currently working on a new header for the site...btw, the reason for the stop in activity is because we are waiting for something, which should increase our activity dramatically, I would also like to hint, that we will be welcoming a new member to staff 
He will be a tremendous asset and help our site to grow vastly in popularity:D

Well, I look forward to meeting this new staff member, and I might attempt to make a couple of banners too, but probably not in flash. =D (never really messed with flash all that much)

prretty good... cant wait for the new guy. I also like the first banner, its good. The second one is too flashy imo.

It better be and the contest is a very good idea. It promotes a variety and gets people involved. Maybe even a small monetary reward to the winner. What do you guys think?
