Free security software

Post by sovietgenius on Sun Jul 27, 2008 1:11 pm

Here are some good free antivirus, antispyware, and firewall programs.

Anti-Virus
AVG (follow the free links, theres like 10 of them)
Avast!

Anti-Spyware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
SUPERAntiSpyware
Ad-Aware

Firewall
Comodo
Outpost Firewall

NEVER RUN MORE THAN ONE OF EACH KIND OF SECURITY SOFTWARE BECAUSE THEY WILL CONFLICT WITH EACH OTHER

Very good list, probably one of the best lists out there. However, as spyware and adware changes and progesses it makes many of these good programs obsolete and pointless. So stay tuned in about 2-3 months for a new update list. The av programs have been good for quite some time now so there is no reason why they cant continue.

For example, Ad-Ware 2007 used to be good in 2007 now its mediocre, while Windows Defender was decent during the first month of its release and like every other windows program it has more holes than swiss cheese after the second month.

Many companies believe they create an invicible program after it works very well for quite some time, but all the glamour gets to them and they hardly update and support the program which makes it fall behind as spyware and adware keeps advancing.

You should add online scanners to the list.
Like therealbuba said viruses and spyware and malware is always growing which means we require new virus definitions. If we scanned with an online scanner most likely gives us the latest virus definitions.

A very good online scanner is Kaspersky Online Scanner

On the topic of online scanners:

Nod32 and BitDefender also offer online scanners.

They can be found here:

Nod32

and

BitDefender

You have a point, I honestly think that Avast is the best free antivirus program out there.

Running both, as stated above, could cause conflict though. Ones scanner could be blocked by anothers shield. Plus, that's just extra wasted memory going to avg since avast has become the new top dawg.

I say kill avg and you should be good to go.

How well does avast "play" with Spyware Doctor? I might be switching from avg.

Avast shouldnt clash with spyware doctor, one of my mates are currentally tryiling it too, they havent had any troubles for about 2 months so far, some are with avg and others with avast..whatone ur with is ur call.
Trial and error is the only way to go!

I dont pay for my avg, nor for my Avast! i only like free versions, anything else is too much for me, anyways i cant pay for them as i dont ahve a credit card.
